SUMMARY:2025 Membership - Join or Renew Now!
DESCRIPTION:It is time to renew your membership to the Friends of the Newburyport Public Library!\n \nThe Newburyport Public Library brings knowledge\, culture and social connections to everyone who visits. As a member of The Friends of the Newburyport Library (FOL)\, you will make a significant contribution to our library community. How important is the FOL to the Newburyport community? \n\nThis past year\, over 10\,000 people attended virtual and in-person adult\, teen and children’s programs. The Friends funded 75% of these programs!\nSome library programs and services exist only because of FOL. Take for example the Museum Pass Program: in 2024 over 990 passes were checked out – 100% funded by FOL. The passes provide varying discount admissions to nearly 20 Massachusetts and New Hampshire museums including the popular New England Aquarium and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Thanks to annual funding by the FOL\, discount passes for museum admission can be reserved on the Newburyport Library website and patrons can enjoy museum adventures for all ages! In fiscal year 2024 the cost to provide this program alone to the library community was over $6\,000.\nEvery year our youngest library patrons benefit from the FOL-funded Summer Reading Program. Over 600 children and adults attended the traveling zoo kick-off event and nearly 450 kids and teens participated in the program throughout the summer.\n\nFriends members pay annual dues renewable in January. We invite you to support our work with the membership dues we rely on to provide vital resources to supplement the city library budget.  The membership year is January through December (not pro-rated) and must be renewed annually. \nMany people have already renewed\, and for that we thank you!  If you haven’t already joined or renewed\, you can do so by clicking the link below. \nAll contributions are tax deductible as we are a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.  We do not use or sell your information. \nJOIN OR RENEW HERE. \n

SUMMARY:Great American Unsung Heroes Who Changed the Course of History: Elizabeth Freeman (VIRTUAL)
DESCRIPTION:Great American Unsung Heroes Who Changed the Course of History: Elizabeth Freeman (VIRTUAL)\nWednesday\, December 18\n7:00—8:15 PM\nVirtual Program\nNewburyport Public Library\n\n\nRetired Massachusetts Superior Court Justice Dennis Curran is excited to continued his monthly “Great American Unsung Heroes Who Changed The Course Of History” series. \nLearn about Elizabeth Freeman\, a little-known national hero\, and a symbol of courage and spirit to all who cherish freedom. She was among the first slaves in Massachusetts to sue for and win her freedom. During the Revolutionary War\, Freeman heard the Massachusetts Constitution read aloud\, and heard these words: “All men are born free and equal….” Freeman recognized the potential legal and moral significance of these words and sought out an attorney to sue for her freedom under the newly-ratified state constitution. With the help of an attorney who was an abolitionist\, she pled her case for freedom in a western Massachusetts court. The jury ruled in her favor\, and she became the first African-American woman set free under the Massachusetts constitution. Her case helped end slavery in Massachusetts. \nDennis J. Curran served as a Massachusetts judge for 16 years\, including in the Superior Court from 2006 to 2018. Prior to his time on the bench\, Curran worked as an Assistant District Attorney and First Assistant Legal Counsel to the Governor\, in addition to work in private practice. A graduate of Boston Latin School\, the University of Pennsylvania\, and the University of Virginia School of Law\, Curran has taught law at Tufts University\, Roger Williams University School of Law\, and Brown University. \nRECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program. \nThis program is brought to you in collaboration with the Tewksbury Library. \nVirtual registration required.
